The Department of Surgery at Rush University Medical Center is seeking a Research Assistant Professor to join its team. The primary activity of a Research Assistant Professor is academic research in association with a faculty member or team. The position will support the research effort of Dr. Mary Beth Madonna, Associate Professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery. The individual who holds this position exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Position Responsibilities:        

  • Plan and direct experiments related to Dr. Madonna’s research.
  • Design, development, implementation and analysis of research projects focused on cancer biology, with particular emphasis on drug resistance and cancer metabolism mechanisms.   
  • Identifies original research projects, experiments, and potential research directions related to research activities; collects, evaluates, interprets and provides documentation of research data to accomplish research objectives.       
  • Provides own data collection, preparation of manuscripts, and research papers for presentation and/or publication.     
  • Maintains a safe laboratory environment and ensures compliance with governmental and University policies, procedures, rules and regulations·        
  • Animal handling and working with animal tissues.     
  • Assists in grant writing to obtain funding for the laboratory.
  • Assists in fundraising endeavors for Dr. Madonna’s research laboratory.
  • Assists in ordering supplies and equipment.      
  • The candidate may also be required to supervise research employees and/or nonexempt staff. 
  • Performs other job related assignments as needed.

Position Qualifications:

  • PhD or MD in sciences or foreign equivalent required.
  • Expertise in molecular biology and protein analysis
  • Experience in writing grant applications and manuscripts and experience with assisting in the training of technicians and students.
  • Strong background in cancer biology with a record of peer-review publications in this area.
  • A minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience is required.
